Is TiVo next on Cisco's push into homes?

Already Cisco has announced plans to spend $6.9 billion on cable set-top maker Scientific - Atlanta. When the deal closes in the next couple of months, it will be the third significant acquisition Silicon Valley-based Cisco has made in the consumer realm.

The question now is, who's next? Will Cisco take a hard look at troubled but well-known TiVo, the maker of digital video recorders? What about Nintendo, maker of video game consoles? Or what about Sling Media, a start-up with technology that lets people watch cable television on their laptops or mobile devices with a broadband connection?

Though Cisco executives certainly won't say who they're looking to buy, there are some hints as to which consumer electronics companies they're considering for partnerships.

According to a source familiar with Cisco and TiVo, there's a "potential for an interesting partnership" to emerge between the two companies. TiVo, the source said, has held discussions with many potential partners.

There's no indication that Cisco is looking to buy TiVo, and details regarding a potential partnership are scant. But Cisco's recent acquisitions do suggest how serious the company is about becoming a major presence in the living room, and TiVo carries weight as a well-known consumer DVR brand. At the same time, Cisco could help TiVo regain the distribution clout it lost when satellite TV provider DirecTV said it was walking away from a longtime partnership with TiVo.

Representatives from both Cisco and TiVo said they would not comment on rumors.

Cisco, best-known for making switches and routers that shuttle IP traffic around corporate networks and throughout the Internet, has for years used acquisitions as a way to enter new markets quickly and to round out its technology and product portfolios. In the past two decades, it's acquired more than 100 companies.

The 2003 acquisition of Linksys, a maker of wireless home-networking equipment, was the company's first foray into the consumer market. Two years later, the first hint of a Cisco home entertainment strategy emerged with the company's acquisition of a small European business called Kiss Technology, a maker of DVD and DVR players.

In November 2005, Cisco took its biggest step into the living room. It agreed to buy Scientific-Atlanta, the No. 2 supplier of set-top boxes to cable operators. The deal, once completed, will instantly put Cisco in millions of homes.

If Cisco builds its consumer business the same way it built its enterprise business, it will likely make several more acquisitions, both large and small, to fill in product gaps and improve on its existing technology.

The company's consumer strategy has two main components, Chris Stevens, a vice president and general manager for Cisco's Linksys home networking division, said in a recent interview with CNET News.com.

First, Cisco plans to enhance the Linksys home-networking portfolio with products that increase the speed and ease-of-use of home networks based on IP technology. Second, it wants to sell consumer electronics products, which it hopes will help drive traffic demand for the network.

Cisco has already begun fulfilling this strategy with both the Kiss and Scientific-Atlanta acquisitions.

"If you want to figure out where we are going, just look at the building blocks we are already assembling," Stevens said. "The elements we already have in the portfolio provide us key capabilities that fit into an end-to-end solution."

First on the list of companies that would fit neatly into Cisco's plans is a start-up called Ruckus Wireless, which has developed a small Wi-Fi adapter tailored for video.

The adapter fits into wireless routers or other consumer electronics products, and it uses multiple antennae to steer wireless signals around obstacles.

Ruckus also uses traffic management software to enable service providers to remotely monitor and manage the quality of the service. Because the technology can be easily embedded into existing hardware, Cisco could add it into the Scientific-Atlanta set-top box or use it in the Kiss DVR product.

Another possible acquisition candidate for Cisco is Nintendo, the No. 3 game console maker in the U.S.

A stretch? Not really. Microsoft, which is emerging as a key competitor to Cisco in the home entertainment market, is already in this market with the Xbox 360. Gaming has already proved to be a strong application for broadband, so it makes sense that Cisco would want to own a game device to help drive more traffic on its network. With its popular GameBoy product, Nintendo would also provide Cisco an entree into the mobile-handheld market.

Another possible target could be the start-up Sling Media, maker of the Sling Box. Sling essentially turns video feeds into IP packets and sends the signal out again over the Internet.

But there are several reasons a partnership with TiVo is much more likely than an acquisition. For one, Cisco already has DVR functionality as part of the set-top boxes it's acquiring from Scientific-Atlanta. Second, TiVo carries a $460 million market capitalization. Third, TiVo suffered a serious blow in distribution when one of its major partners, DirecTV, decided to end a reseller relationship. TiVo now has a distribution deal with Comcast.

"The deal stopper for Cisco would probably be the fact that TiVo is losing customers," said Albert Lin, an analyst with American Technology Research.

More big Cisco home entertainment moves may take some time to happen.

"Cisco will go slowly in digesting Scientific-Atlanta," said Murray Arenson, a senior analyst at Ferris Baker Watts. "There are still a lot of hanging question marks to answer before they go out and acquire anything else in this market."

Insight Media Releases 2006 Projection Lamp Report

Detailing the technology, trends, markets, forecasts and companies involved in High Intensity Discharge Lamps for Projection System Applications. Laser Projection and LED Projection Reports to follow in mid-February

January 26, 2006 -- Insight Media is pleased to announce the release of the 2006 Projection Lamp Report. This 331-page report details the technology, trends, markets, forecasts and companies involved in High Intensity Discharge Lamps for Projection System Applications.

After rapid projection system growth in 2004 and 2005, the report finds that there is sufficient capacity to produce UHP-type lamps now and in the foreseeable future, with main growth engines coming from professional projection and lamp replacement markets. This should create stable demand, but with declining prices. Nevertheless, changes are coming rapidly.

As a result of rapid growth of flat panel TVs, we have reduced our forecast for microdisplay-based RPTVs, resulting in lower demand for new and replacement lamps. In addition, new illumination sources like LED and lasers are entering the market in 2006. Our forecast shows top-level penetration of these sources into the market for projection systems. Insight Media will be releasing the companion 2006 Laser Projection Report and 2006 LED Projection Report mid-February.

In addition, there are new categories for projectors that could emerge to drive sales, such as low cost projection systems. Such new categories could represent opportunities for LED, laser and other HID illumination sources.

Report Objective:

The objective of this report is to supply technologists, managers, product planners, engineers and researchers in both the lamp and the projection industries with the information needed to plan, design and manufacture the illumination stage of microdisplay-based projection displays. The required information needed to make these decisions includes performance data, cost information and availability, all forecasted from 2005-2009.

Highlights:

*Forecast of projector sales through 2009, broken down by market segment and user group. This is used to create a top-down view of lamp demand.
*Forecasts of lamp sales for the OEM projector market
*Forecasts of lamp sales for the replacement lamp market, including complete models of the need for replacement lamps in 18 user groups. This is used to create a bottom-up view of demand, which agrees well with the top-down approach.
*Forecasts of lamp manufacturing capacity and production, broken down by vendor
*Forecast of lamp prices and factors affecting lamp prices
*Coverage of Illumination technologies that threaten the dominance of ultra-high-pressure mercury lamps
*18 complete profiles of vendors, including:
~Profiles of 11 ultra-high pressure mercury lamp (UHP-type) manufacturers. Xenon lamps for projection from these vendors are also covered
~Profile of 1 xenon lamp manufacturer
~Profile of 6 lamp reflector manufacturers
~Plus a table listing 31 lamp related companies, with contact information.
*The appendix contains explanations of lamp technology and manufacturing, plus sections on LED and solid-state Laser technology.
*View the complete table of contents

The main body of the report contains 137 figures and 51 tables. The Profiles section contains a rich assortment of figures, tables and other data on the profiled companies. The technical appendix contains 25 figures related to lamp, LED and Laser technology.

Comparison to the 2004 Projection Lamp Report

This report has several major additions, compared to the Insight Media 2004 Projection Lamp Report.

*Lamp pricing information, previously an extra-cost add-on, is now incorporated in the main report.
*Forecasts in the 2004 report went through 2006 or 2007. In the 2006 report, all forecasts are extended through 2009. All forecasts have been updated to reflect changes in the projection market in 2005.
*The 2006 report contains 18 company profiles, compared to 7 in the 2004 report. All profiles have been updated to reflect 2005 developments.
*The 2006 report contains 331 pages compared to 148 in 2004.
*A greatly expanded and more detailed replacement lamp model is provided to calculate the expected demand of ultra-high pressure mercury lamps for the projection market through 2009.

Who Should Buy:

*Anyone considering designing or manufacturing a microdisplay-based projection system.
*Wholesales, retailers or others involved in or contemplating entry into the replacement lamp market for projection systems.
*Lamp manufacturers in the projection market, or contemplating entering the projection market. This includes suppliers of both OEM and replacement lamps.
*People planning research, development or products utilizing UHP-type lamps.
*Engineers and researchers involved in microdisplay-based projection systems.
*Anyone interested in the projection lamp market.

Ethereal Introduces EHT Line Of Interconnects

Value-priced line provides high performance for entry-level home theater enthusiasts

HOLLY HILL, Fla., JANUARY 24, 2006: Ethereal Home Theater meets the needs of the entry-level home theater enthusiast with its premium-quality EHT line of A/V interconnects.

Previously sold at retailers as the 700 Series, EHT represents a redesign that carries through a consistent look throughout Ethereal’s consumer lines, which include flagship Elite and the new mid-market EM. The EHT line incorporates many of the same core design and construction principles as the EM line, but does not include the upgrades. Cables have a sleek black PVC jacket, with ends that are color-coded in bright hues and shaped to provide a good grip for installation convenience.

“Because EHT is geared for entry-level home theater consumers who are likely to be doing their own equipment hook-up, we wanted to make the process as easy as possible,” said Bill Fornino, Ethereal Home Theater COO. “For that reason, EHT’s color-coded ends are in bright colors, so the consumer can readily see which cables go where. The grips at the ends provide a secure hold on the cable.”

Quality construction features include:
• 24K gold-plated terminals for the best
possible signal transfer
• Low capacitance dielectric inner cable jackets and Mylar® foil shield for optimum noise rejection
• Precision-wound strands of braided oxygen-free copper for the clearest transmit and return paths

The EHT line covers eight product categories to address the most popular applications: audio stereo, audio digital coaxial, Toslink™ optical, composite, video stereo audio, S-cable, F-F CATV and component.

EHT is also available for professional installers in polybag packaging.

Said Fornino, “EHT is ideal for consumers who are just getting started with home theater and want high performance, but don’t need the advanced cable construction features that would be necessary to get the most from upgraded or high-end equipment.”

Vizualogic Brings Media-on-Demand System to Automobiles with the DS-3000

CORONA, CA – Imagine one source for all of your movies, music and memories…a system easy enough for kids and parents to use...a system that offers connectivity for all your devices. Now, imagine it in your automobile. It’s not just a figment of imagination; it’s coming this year from Vizualogic.

The DS-3000™ Media-on-Demand system from the industry’s foremost mobile entertainment manufacturer, will take Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE) to a whole new level, bringing content from iPods®, PMP (Portable Media Player) devices and other MP3 players, videos, DVDs, digital cameras, jump drivers and other portable storage devices right into your vehicle.

Vizualogic displayed a Proof of Concept system at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The DS-3000 is based on Vizualogic’s popular A-1000 All-in-One headrest monitor/DVD player, with some major additions:

• A front panel-mounted USB jack allows for iPod, MP3 or mass storage device use.
• WiFi connectivity, allowing for file transfers to the unit via an icon on a home computer.
• An integrated hard drive which will allow video, audio and photo files to be viewed simultaneously on any or all headrest monitors in the system. This would allow one viewer to start a movie, while others in the vehicle can pause/play/rewind the same movie without disrupting other viewers in the vehicle.

“ We see this as the wave of the future,” said Warren Moran, senior vice president of sales and marketing, Vizualogic. “Consumers are looking for an easy way to bring their digital content into their automobiles. And with more than 37 million iPods already sold, we’ve endeavored to introduce an iPod-compatible product that will allow consumers to access those files while on the road.

“ Since the unit displayed at CES is a proof of concept, some of the features may change as we gauge consumer reaction,” Moran added.

And because the DS-3000 will be designed from the existing A-1000 headrest system, it will be available to fit the thousands of A-1000 vehicle/model/color applications the company now offers.
Vizualogic specializes in the development and manufacture of high quality integrated mobile electronic systems and accessories.

Vizualogic is a division of TMI Products, Inc. TMI, with more than 190 employees, was founded in 1982, and is based in Corona, CA.

Vizualogic and Oxford Media Sign Partnership to Provide Movie Content to the Automobile Passenger Market

CORONA, CA and IRVINE, CA – January 6, 2006 – Imagine passengers in an automobile equipped with an in-car entertainment system being able to stop at a gas station, hotel or rental car agency and download the latest movies into its system. Vizualogic, a leading manufacturer of rear seat entertainment (RSE) systems for automobiles, and Oxford Media, Inc. (OTCBB: OXMI), a secure digital communication and technology company, have signed a partnership agreement to make this a reality.

This plan can become a reality thanks to the expertise and wherewithal of the two companies and a burgeoning technology known as WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access), a fast-emerging, wide-area wireless broadband technology that provides a powerful “last mile” solution for high-speed access. WiMAX can reach as far as ten miles covering wider, metropolitan or rural areas - far greater than the now common WiFi service, which handles small, local areas such as offices or hotspots.

The companies plan to complete a proof of concept test within the next six months which will prove that entertainment content can be sent via WiMAX to remote locations (for example, rental car agencies, hotels and gas stations), which will serve as a content distribution point to automobiles equipped with VizuaLogic’s in-car passenger entertainment systems. The content will be sent in MPEG 4 format which will allow for faster downloads, interactivity and high resolution picture quality. Commercial deployment could begin as early as late 2006.

Oxford Media recently began a sales and marketing campaign of its proprietary digital Video-On-Demand and pay-for-view entertainment system, known as eMOD, aimed at the small and mid-sized hotels and motels -- a segment of the hotel industry previously underserved and unable to offer such services to their guests. This targeted market of hospitality properties with between 50 to 300 rooms comprises over 2.4 million hotel rooms in the U.S. and represents approximately 56% of the total hotel market. eMOD is one of the only hotel entertainment systems optimized for WiMAX deployment. The company plans to install WiMAX antennas on the rooftops of these hotels, eventually creating a nationwide network. Consumers with VizuaLogic automotive Media-on-Demand RSE systems would be able to download content onto an in-vehicle hard drive for mobile viewing.

“We are extremely excited to be working with Oxford Media to bring entertainment content availability to the automobile passenger market via VizuaLogic’s extensive aftermarket and OEM network,” said Warren Moran, Vice President of sales and marketing for VizuaLogic. “This agreement fits well with our current strategy of developing media content via Media-on-Demand rear seat entertainment systems.”

Commenting on the announcement, Tom Hemingway, President and CEO of Oxford Media, stated, “This partnership with VizuaLogic is representative of the enormous size of the various markets we plan to target for distribution of entertainment content. We believe our proprietary technology and business model based on hospitality content distribution platform will give us a dramatic advantage over any potential competition attempting to deliver content solely to the automobile passenger market.”
