As the market for home theater has matured, B&W has responded to the growing need for compact “stealth” solutions that still deliver a full measure of our celebrated performance, yet address the specific needs of large scale dedicated theater installations. The original all out CT800 package set the bar higher than ever before and is still the measure of ultimate home theater sound. However, we recognize there are cost and size constraints for many installations and we are pleased to introduce the latest member of the CT8 family, the CT8.2. The CT8.2 is, in my view, the anchor product for our CT offerings. In its category, I believe it merits the same respect as the iconic 802D. It’s that good!
Custom Theater, as defined by Bowers & Wilkins, requires a specific approach to loudspeaker design that recognizes the unique environmental factors and acoustic challenges of these installations. Speakers must be designed to disappear into recessed enclosures or behind a perforated screen. The wide dynamics of movie soundtracks coupled with a desire for high SPL capability means these systems need to be efficient and rugged. Yet, at B&W, we don’t want to sacrifice tonal neutrality and musicality in the bargain.
These engineering demands are exactly what Bowers & Wilkins excels at and our team of specialists at the Steyning Research facility in the UK has outdone themselves once again. With the CT8.2, B&W has now delivered a complete range of outstanding Custom Theater speakers that offer exceptionally high performance for every application and price range.
The CT8.2 is a passive three-way, vented-box, monopole LCR speaker. The CT8.2 is replete with B&W innovations, including a 1.25” aluminum dome tweeter with Nautilus™ spiral tube technology, a 6” FST (Fixed Suspension Transducer) blue Kevlar® midrange, and twin 8” paper/Kevlar bass drivers with a dual Flowport™ cabinet design. The speaker can be installed either vertically or horizontally due to its unique design. The midrange and tweeter housing can be removed from the top (vertical placement) and swapped with the upper bass unit for horizontal applications, thereby making it extremely versatile.
The 91dB sensitivity is very high for a non-hornloaded speaker and the system can handle extreme dynamics effortlessly, yet also reveal the tiniest nuances that contribute so much to cinematic storytelling. Like all B&W speakers, it is also an outstanding music reproducer. Power recommendations for the CT8.2 are 50-500 watts depending on theater design and SPL objectives. The speaker is finished in a non-reflective soft touch black paint.
Suggested retail is $6000 each and availability and we will be shipping by the end of May.
